The A level French course will give you an opportunity to build on the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE. You will be able to enhance your understanding of French culture and contemporary social issues. At the same time you will be encouraged to develop your linguistic confidence through the study of grammar and various topics.
The themes studied in Year 1 are :
– The changing family
– The cybersociety
– Volunteering and charities
– French cultural heritage
– French contemporary music
– French cinema
You will also study a film in Year 1 “Au revoir les enfants” by Louis Malle
The exam board is AQA and there are 3 papers (all taken at the end of Year 2) : Paper 1 (Listening and Reading) worth 50% of the overall grade, Paper 2 (Writing) worth 20% of the overall grade and Paper 3 (Speaking) worth 30% of the overall grade.
In order to get a head start in A level French you could do some background reading on some of the topics we study in year 1(for ex. articles /texts about social network or French cinema), listen to French podcasts (ex. on Spotify), learn new vocabulary with Quizlet. Try to keep up with current affairs and news in French ( visit websites such as Le Monde or Le Figaro or Libération for ex.). Work on your grammar by consolidating your knowledge of verbs and tenses(visit Languages online website).
