Sixth Form student gets England Colleges football team call-up

Our Sixth Form College student Brandon Schofield has secured a place in the English Colleges Football Association national squad.

Brandon, a centre back who plays for Denaby Main Football Club, Penistone Church Football Club and Barnsley Sports Academy, will train at St George’s Park, the English Football Association’s National Football Centre and will have the opportunity to gain experience of playing at a higher level by representing the College in nationally recognised competitions.

“The Barnsley Sports Academy has significantly helped me so far, by offering excellent, varied training sessions and I’ve found it lots of fun as well.”

A former Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday academy player, Brandon dedicated himself to football, which he took up at the age of 4 after initially playing in his garden with his dad.

The Business, Economics and Physical Education A Level student, said: “To be selected for the English Colleges Football Association national squad means a lot to me. As an ex-Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday academy player, I have felt at times that I’ve let myself and those family and friends who believed in me down, but now this opportunity has arose I feel like it’s my chance to prove myself again.

“My next step in football is to strive towards playing semi-professional or professional football and to constantly work hard even when hurdles may be thrown in my way. The Barnsley Sports Academy has significantly helped me so far, by offering excellent, varied training sessions and I’ve found it lots of fun as well.”

Luke Forgione, Sports Performance and Athlete Development Co-ordinator at Barnsley College, added: “It is fantastic to have Brandon selected for the England Colleges team. Brandon is the sixth player in the last six years to be selected for the team, this illustrates the calibre of players we have at the College. We are extremely proud of Brandon, who continuously performs at a high level in our Male Football Academy and has been rewarded for his efforts with the International call up. Playing for your country at any level is a superb achievement.”
