College LGBTQ+ society create colourful display

Barnsley College’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ+) Society has produced a video and decorated the college’s Health and Wellbeing Centre in order to raise awareness of the society to fellow students.

The display has been produced by current members of the society and includes colourful handprints, flags and symbols representing gender and sexuality. The video explains in further detail the meaning behind the flags and symbols and also provides case studies on how the society has helped and supported its members.

The LGBTQ+ Society, currently the largest society at the college, is run by students and provides a great opportunity for its members to explore the LGBTQ+ community within the college and in Barnsley. They organise a number of events and also provide advice and guidance to anyone wanting to talk about LGBTQ+ matters or discuss any other issues that they may have.

A Level student Adam Pye said: “Last year I was really shy but since I joined the society I have become much more confident and the support I have received has been brilliant.”

Hannah Agnew, A Level student and the LBGTQ+ Society Leader added: “The society is open to anyone studying at the college and it’s so rewarding to know that we are having such a positive impact on our members. This year we are wanting to reach out to as many students as we can and are looking at different ways to raise our profile.”

The display in the Health and Wellbeing Centre is another step towards the college reaching its Rainbow Tick status which is awarded to organisations who recognise and welcome diversity and inclusion.
