Students experience a day at the top of UK justice

Barnsley Sixth Form College A Level Law students visited three of the UK’s most significant legal and political institutions, gaining first-hand insight into how law and democracy operate in practice.

The day began at the Royal Courts of Justice, where students explored the historic courts that underpin the justice system of England and Wales. Walking through its grand halls, they were able to connect their studies with the real-world environment in which landmark legal decisions are made.

The group then travelled to the Houses of Parliament, where they were hosted by Stephanie Peacock MP. During an engaging talk, she shared insights into her role as an MP and the relationship between law, policy and public service. Students were also granted access to the public viewing gallery of the House of Commons, where they observed a live speech witnessing parliamentary debate in action.

The visit concluded at the Supreme Court, offering students an opportunity to reflect on the highest level of judicial decision-making in the UK. Seeing the courtrooms and learning about the Supreme Court’s role brought their understanding of constitutional law firmly into focus.

Holly Luker, a Criminology, Sociology and Law A Level student, said: “Seeing the House of Commons in action helped me to respect the complexity behind all debates that take place surrounding how laws can be changed.”

Overall, the visit provided a valuable, immersive experience, linking classroom learning to the institutions that shape law, governance and justice in the UK.
