Art in action at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
The visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park remains a key experience for A Level Fine Art and Photography students, offering a valuable opportunity to engage with art beyond the classroom. This year’s trip encouraged students to explore, experiment and develop their practice within a dynamic outdoor setting.
Surrounded by large-scale installations and varied landscapes, students made full use of the environment to support their coursework. With sketchbooks and cameras in hand, they investigated form, composition and perspective, capturing responses through both drawing and photography.
The day supported individual project work, allowing students to develop ideas in response to real-world stimuli. Fine Art students also participated in a specialist workshop, helping to strengthen analytical skills and deepen their understanding of artistic processes.
Emily Bellwood, a Core Math, Geography, Sociology and Fine Art student, said: “I enjoyed seeing the sculptures in person rather than just in pictures. It gave me a new perspective on the work. I also learnt to be more experimental with my photography, especially when thinking about different viewpoints. I’ll definitely approach future exhibitions by considering different perspectives and interpretations.”
Destiny Richards, a Biology, Chemistry and Art and Design student, thought: “I most enjoyed seeing sculptures in an outdoor setting, as it helped me develop my observational drawing skills across a wide range of mediums. I gained a deeper understanding of how artists use scale, materials and space, and how the setting can transform the meaning of a piece. Position and perspective proved especially important. The trip has supported my studies by giving me ideas for my own work and providing useful examples for my coursework. Above all, it showed me how much there is to explore, encouraging me to be more courageous in my future art practice.”
Chloe Moulding, A Level Fine Art and Photography tutor and the trip organiser, added: “This visit gives students the chance to experience art in a more immersive way. Combining independent exploration with guided learning helps to build both confidence and critical thinking.”
